"Jesus Seekers"
As we enter into each new day befuddled by what the world has become and uncertain of what the future may hold, let us remember that Jesus did not sit idly by waiting for the weather to improve or for nicer people to surround Him. Every day of his three-year ministry was rich with new encounters, and he continually sought out those who needed him most. Do you seek out not just those who affirm you, sound like you, or make you feel good, but those who need you most? What might this week look like for you if you determined to be a Jesus Seeker? What would the world look like if we Christians all spent our days listening to and affirming those in need?
Let's worship together:
Call to Worship: Peace in Christ

Worship: Worship Team
Lyrics: Everlasting God & Sinking Deep
Children's Message (Adults, too!): VeggieTales -- Zacchaeus Sing-Along

Pray: Jesus & Zacchaeus
Can you hear Jesus speaking these words from Luke 19:9-10 over you this week?
Today salvation has come to this house, because (your name), too, is a daughter/son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
Amen.

"Burden-Bearers"
In Galatians 6:2, Paul reminds us that we are to carry one another's burdens in order to fulfill the law of Christ. The Greek word for burden is the adjective barus, which means heavy, burdensome, oppressive, and even violent. The word refers to an oppression so grievous that a person is unable to move about freely. As sisters and brothers in Christ, we are called to carry these burdens for one another, much as Christ carries our burdens for us. Why, then, do we Christians have a reputation of being judgmental, hypocritical, and intolerant? Why do we not instead have the reputation of other-worldly kindness, selflessness, and generosity? In this era of cultural rewriting, how will we help to rewrite the reputation of the church?

"Unity + Diversity = The Church"
When God created the earth in Genesis 1, He brought together beauty, artistry, and creativity in supernatural precision that stretches far beyond what our human brains can comprehend. He did not become bored with the assignment, opting for factory patterns in an effort to hurry to completion; instead he created each new life with perfect love, uniquely distinct and wholly purposeful. When Jesus came to earth two thousand years ago, he came to remind us that the patterns are not ours to label and categorize and use to undermine one another; instead we are to love God and love each other -- wholly, fully, and regardless of the impediments we may want to list. God's creation is undergirded with the enormity of His love, as we hear in Dr. Maya Angelou's Call to Worship today titled "Love Liberates." And God's creation is masterfully perfect in its unfathomable diversity, as we are reminded in Paul's words to the church in Corinth and in the beautiful "Ode to Joy" flash mob in Sabadell, Spain. As you watch the instruments gather and hear the beauty of Beethoven's Ode swell into fullness, consider the power of the church when we fully honor the unity and diversity that God calls us to. What will our song be in the year ahead, and how will we ensure that everyone has the opportunity to play their God-ordained role? Let's worship together:
Call to Worship: Dr. Maya Angelou -- Love Liberates

As American poet Gwendolyn Brooks once said, "We are each other's harvest; we are each other's business; we are each other's magnitude and bond." May you move boldly into the week ahead, confident in your ordained role as a member of the body, liberated by the love of your sisters and brothers who surround you, and resolute in your support of the unity and diversity of the church.

"A Ministry of Reconciliation"
John Wesley, an English theologian and the founder of Methodism, appealed for a reconciliation-focused church in his 18th-century explanatory notes on the New Testament. Hear his commentary here on Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 5:17-20:
What unparalleled condescension and divinely tender mercies are displayed [in these verses]! Did the judge ever beseech a condemned criminal to accept pardon? Does the creditor ever beseech a ruined debtor to receive an acquittal in full? Yet our almighty Lord, and our eternal Judge, not only vouchsafes to offer these blessings, but invites us, entreats us, and, with the most tender importunity, solicits us not to reject them.
The Bible is a living document, inspired by and infused with the Holy Spirit so that the words we read are useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16) regardless of our age, culture, race, denomination, gender, or cultural lens. Listen prayerfully to Paul's words to the church in Corinth this week, my friends, and consider well the role that you as an individual are to play as Christ's ambassador to the world and a minister of reconciliation. As Wesley reminds us above, the Lord is inviting, entreating, and soliciting us not to reject His offer of reconciliation. Let's worship together:

"Firewalls"
In his poem "East Coker," the second of the "Four Quartets," poet T.S. Eliot writes the following:
As we grow older
The world becomes stranger, the pattern more complicated
Of dead and living. Not the intense moment
Isolated, with no before and after
But a lifetime burning in every moment.
For most of us, life feels stranger, more complicated, and even frightening as May 2020 draws to a close. But just as the Bible is a magnificently intertwined story rather than a fragmented collection of 66 books, the intense moments of your life are not "isolated, with no before and after" in God's economy. As Eliot writes, each moment that you live -- whether painful, fear-filled, joyous, or contented -- is "a lifetime burning in every moment." How can you live this day and this week embracing that knowledge? How can you step into this new week undergirded by the strength of the Holy Spirit as we celebrate Pentecost Sunday? Let's worship together:

"Take Off Your Sandals"
Do you hear how fiercely people need to know Jesus this year, this month, this week? For Christians, the name "Jesus" carries power, healing, peace, and hope. For non-Christians, a mere mention of the name can close a conversation. So how do we bridge from one extreme to the other? How do we rewrite American cultural assumptions so the word "Jesus" brings a smile to everyone's face, believer or nonbeliever, because everyone equates his name with laughter, joy, and renewal? We have a calling as God's people, and we each have a role in that calling. What's yours?

"You Know the Way"
Each week as I think I am growing accustomed to this new way of living and engaging with the world, something new happens that surprises me all over again, making me doubt the shaky assumptions I have made about the next few weeks, days, or even hours. Am I so reliant on the security of my own calendar that each new blip threatens to dampen my joy? I hope not, but I do know that the little footholds seem important these days. I have found great assurance this week in reminders from Jesus that (1) He has commanded us to focus on loving one another, (2) He knows we will falter, and (3) He believes in us: "You know the way to the place where I am going," he tells us in John 14:4. I don't always feel like I know, but if He tells me it's so, I believe Him, and I hope you do as well. Let's renew our faith and remember the truth of His promises on this beautiful spring Sunday. While you may be alone or just with those in your household today, please remember that we are together in Spirit -- sisters and brothers in Christ worshiping together as one:

May you hear the words of today's Call to Worship echoing in your heart throughout this week ahead:
The Lord bless you And keep you Make His face shine upon you And be gracious to you The Lord turn His Face toward you And give you peace.
May His favor be upon you And a thousand generations And your family and your children And their children, and their children.
May His presence go before you And behind you, and beside you All around you, and within you He is with you, He is with you.
In the morning, in the evening In your coming, and your going In your weeping, and rejoicing He is for you, He is for you.
He is for you, He is for you He is for you, He is for you He is for you, He is for you.
He is for you, indeed. Be blessed, my friends. Amen.

"Living Life on God's Terms, Part II"
I have been struck this week by the biblical concept of beauty: of the intricacy of God's creation, of the perfection of God's infinite plan, of the simplicity of our calling to simply take each best next step. We complicate things, don't we? We long for what we shouldn't have, we put off the things that are best for us, we drag our feet when the Lord calls us to listen, and we rationalize the reasons why we can't, we shouldn't, and we won't. But maybe it is the beauty of spring this month that can call us back to the core of who we are in the Holy Spirit. As we each ponder the magical beauty of God's creation outside our windows on this first Sunday in May, let's worship together:

"Living Life on God's Terms"
When I drove to Wal-Mart on Saturday afternoon to pick up our pre-ordered groceries, I was thrilled to see eggs, milk, and ice cream in our bags as they were loaded into the back of our van -- staples for our home that have not always been available these past six weeks. While it is difficult to not know what is coming next and to be continually in concerned prayer for the health and financial well-being of those around us, I am enjoying the pleasure of a grateful heart. The groceries we desire are not always available, and I'm OK with that. A grocery run or even an Amazon search are now a game of wonder: Will the item I am seeking be available at all? Will the price have skyrocketed beyond the reasonable? Will it arrive in my accustomed one- to two-day turn-around or in two months? I no longer assume. And I am sorry now that I ever assumed. Our lives are not ours -- not really -- and that is the greatest blessing of all. So how can we re-learn how to live as children anticipating the best out of each new day, never really knowing what's on the calendar or what our next meal will be? Happy Sunday, Friends. Let's worship together:

"Resetting the Default"
Happy Sunday, all. As we look together at a passage from Ephesians 4 today, keep in mind that Paul is writing these words of exhortation and encouragement from prison. The churches of Asia Minor are struggling, enduring pressure to conform to Jewish law, stress by local magic and demonic powers, and a general pull away from the path that Jesus has called them to. In his letter to the Church in Ephesus, Paul introduces a new joining of Gentiles and Jews, emphasizes Christ's victory over the secular "powers" that are distracting the church, and insists on a need to walk in a way that maintains the unity of the Spirit. Friends, we, too, are called to all three: (1) a new kind of humanity, (2) a fierceness regarding Christ's victory, and (3) intentional unity in the Spirit -- not just despite our current circumstances, but because of our current circumstances. Let's consider together:

In-Home Worship for Palm Sunday, April 5, 2020
Happy Palm Sunday, Friends! Palm Sunday is a celebration of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem as described in Matthew 21, Mark 11, Luke 19, and John 12. As you are in your homes this week, how might you mark the days of Holy Week as we anticipate Easter together? Here they are: Palm Sunday (Jesus' ride into Jerusalem), Holy Monday (Jesus cleanses the Temple), Holy Tuesday (Jesus declares his deity), Spy Wednesday (Judas betrays Jesus), Maundy Thursday (the Last Supper), Good Friday (Jesus is crucified) , Holy Saturday (Jesus body lay in the tomb). We will revisit these in more detail in this Tuesday's Cedar Creek Chronicles. Today let's focus on the excited anticipation of greeting Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, as He rides into Jerusalem. How does the hope and promise of this story reverberate for us today?

"For My Thoughts Are Not Your Thoughts"
As the days pass and COVID-19 news remains difficult, we are called ever-more to turn to our Lord in faith and trust, and to our friends and family in love. Do you hear echoes of the Greatest Commandments in the ways our lives are being stripped down to the essentials? "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment," Jesus told the Pharisees in Matthew 22. "And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Each morning as you rise and each evening as you go to sleep, ponder with the Lord how you are faring: Are you loving the Lord wholly and completely? And are you loving those around you fully and selflessly? There is no checklist here of "do this" or "don't do this" in order to succeed, Friends. There is only you, the Lord, and the home the Lord has blessed you with for these days and weeks to come. How will you honor Him with your love today? Let's prayerfully ponder God's word and worship the One True King together this morning:

Living Hope
Verse 1
How great the chasm that lay between us
How high the mountain I could not climb
In desperation I turned to heaven
And spoke Your name into the night
Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness
Tore through the shadows of my soul
The work is finished the end is written
Jesus Christ my living hope
Verse 2
Who could imagine so great a mercy
What heart could fathom such boundless grace
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame
The cross has spoken I am forgiven
The King of kings calls me His own
Beautiful Savior I’m Yours forever
Jesus Christ my living hope
Chorus
Hallelujah praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope
Verse 3
Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
(REPEAT)
Jesus Yours is the victory whoa
Ending
Jesus Christ my living hope
Oh God You are my living hope

Pray: Isaiah 55:8-9
Consider these words from Pastor Adam T. Barr of Peace Church in Middleville, Michigan: "Exiled Israel must have battled incredulity at God's word through Isaiah. Not only did He indicate restoration, the Lord promised joy and triumph. In light of their present circumstances, these commandments surely seemed extravagant. Of course, one's trust in God's promises will reflect one's theology. Those who worship a weak God will doubt His power to keep faith. Those who bow before the sovereign Lord of history can confidently affirm, 'God's word does not return void.'"
Be blessed, be well, and be healthy.

"For Such A Time As This"
A joyful Sunday to you, however you may be enjoying this beautiful sunshine today. I hope you realize how blessed we each are to have healthy air to breathe, beautiful greenery outside our windows, internet connections that allow us to see and hear one another, friends and family who care, and a God who loves us right where we are. We are all experiencing this curious COVID-19 health crisis in varying ways, but above all I hope we can agree (1) that God is in control, (2) that God loves us each fully and completely, and (3) that we each fully and completely love that God is in control. If nothing more, let these days affirm for all of us that it is God -- not our careful planning, not our worldly hopes, not our Google calendars, not the weight of our difficult pasts, not our sinful habits -- but GOD who is in control of the universe. And praise the Lord for that. Let us consider together the ways that we can step fully into whatever God is calling us to in the current moment:

Do It Again
By Chris Brown, Mack Brock, Steven Furtick, Matt Redman
Walking around these walls
I thought by now they’d fall
But you have never failed me yet
Waiting for change to come
Knowing the battle’s won
For you have never failed me yet
(Chorus) Your promise still stands
Great is your faithfulness
Faithfulness
I’m still in your hands
This is my confidence
You’ve never failed me yet
I know the night won’t last
Your word will come to pass
My heart will sing your praise again
Jesus you’re still enough
Keep me within your love
My heart will sing your praise again
(Chorus 2x)
I’ve seen you move
You move the mountains
And I believe
I’ll see you do it again
You made a way
Where there was no way
And I believe
I’ll see you do it again (repeat)
I’ll see you do it again

Pray: Turning to God in Faith
May the Lord bless you and keep you, and may the birds of the air and the flowers of the field be a reminder that we are called to trust, not worry. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)
