Jennie Harrop began attending Cedar Creek Church in early 2011 with her family. Jennie has a DMin in semiotics from Portland Seminary, a PhD in English from the University of Denver, an MFA in creative writing from Colorado State University, and a BA in journalism from Pacific Lutheran University. In addition to her work as Pastor of Cedar Creek Church, Jennie is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Professional Studies at George Fox University. As a professor, Jennie has taught a variety of university-level literature, composition, and Christian apologetics courses. As a bivocational pastor, Jennie seeks to empower a uniquely collaborative church body, connecting congregation members with the people and resources they need to grow in Christ, love others well, and further God’s Kingdom by serving others.
A fifth-generation Oregonian, Jennie has served as Elder in three Presbyterian denominations over two decades: PC(USA), EPC, and ECO. At Cedar Creek, Jennie served for six years as Ruling Elder before she was hired as Pastor in 2019. She has been preaching at our church since 2013. In her many years of church leadership, Jennie has mentored college-age young adults, taught Bible studies for women, guided focused studies for church leadership, taught confirmation classes for youth, and hosted a weekly small group in her home.
Jennie also is Director of GFU’s Portland Writing Center and Chaplain of Sherwood’s Boy Scout Troop 116, which meets weekly at Cedar Creek Church.
Jennie has published six books, including The Jesus Quotient: IQ to EQ to AQ (Cascade Books, 2019) and The Simple Math of Writing Well: Writing for the 21st Century (Pennington Press, 2018). She also has published three children’s books through Oxford University Press (2012) and a critical book titled Angling for Repose: Wallace Stegner and the De-Mythologizing of the American West (2010). In the 1980s and 1990s, she was a news and crime reporter for several newspapers, including the Chicago News Tribune, The Oregonian, and The Tacoma News Tribune.
Jennie and her husband, Karl, are blessed with a lively and joyful home in Sherwood with their five teens/preteens: Miles, Piper, Mattie, Josie, and Carson. When they are not at church or work, Jennie and Karl can be found cheering as their kids play sports, dance, and sing on stage at Sherwood Middle School, Sherwood High School, and George Fox University.
