Crescendo
For the first time ever, the ceremonial pre-game flyover at last Sunday's Super Bowl was performed by an all-woman aviator team -- commemorating the 50-year anniversary of women pilots in the U.S. Navy.
The electronic warfare aircraft flyover came at the crescendo of the "Star-Spangled Banner," signaling the end of the pre-game buildup to the Super Bowl game, and for the woman aviators, the honor was both humbling and a long time coming.
Women make up roughly 20% of the Navy today, but only between 7 and 12% are pilots, according to military statistics. Seven female aviators participated in the flyover in Glendale, Arizona, this past Sunday, with nine additional aviators on standby in case substitutes were needed. In their initial plans, the Navy had just three women among the 15 service members selected to participate, but as word got out about the 50th anniversary, the Navy benched the male pilots in favor of the all-female team.
In 1973, the first eight women began flight school in Pensacola, Florida, and one year later, six of those eight women -- nicknamed "The First Six" -- earned their Wings of Gold.
TheSuper Bowlflyover featured two F/A-18F Super Hornets from the Flying Eagles of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 122, an F-35C Lightning II from the Argonauts of VFA-147,and an EA 18G Growler from the Vikings of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129. According to the Navy,“These aircraft represent the strike and electronic attack capability of the ‘Carrier Air Wing of the Future,’ providing advanced technology and enhanced flexibility to our military combatant commanders.”
God intends for each of us to flourish, Friends, and in loving one another -- as Jesus commands us -- how can we ensure that those around us are flourishing as well? Are there doors that are closed to you or others around you that you can begin to press against? What role can you play in helping those you encounter to experience the fullness of God in the life they lead?
Peace on your week,
Jennie
