Our Christ Has Come
Margaret Deland was an American poet, short story writer, and novelist who published 33 books before her death in January 1945. Born in Philadelphia in 1857, Deland lived primarily in Boston, Massachusetts, and Kennebunkport, Maine, and was best known for her Old Chester books and her novel John Ward, Preacher.
Listen to the joyful anticipation in her 1886 Christmas poem titled "The Waits":
At the break of Christmas Day,
Through the frosty starlight ringing,
Faint and sweet and far away,
Comes the sound of children, singing,
Chanting, singing,
“Cease to mourn,
For Christ is born,
Peace and joy to all men bringing!”
Careless that the chill winds blow,
Growing stronger, sweeter, clearer,
Noiseless footfalls in the snow,
Bring the happy voices nearer;
Hear them singing,
“Winter’s drear,
But Christ is here,
Mirth and gladness with Him bringing.”
“Merry Christmas!” hear them say,
As the East is growing lighter;
“May the joy of Christmas Day
Make your whole year gladder, brighter!”
Join their singing,
“To each home
Our Christ has come,
All Love’s treasures with Him bringing!”
When the angel appeared to the shepherds and the light of the Lord shone around them, the angel spoke, "Do not be afraid," he said. "I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people" (Luke 2:9-10).
Mirth, gladness, singing, and great joy ... How and where do you sense Christ's presence as Christmas approaches?
Blessings on your Advent week,
