Pursuing Peace

Christ promises us a supernatural peace that surpasses anything we may encounter here on earth: the pain, the disappointment, the longing, the irritants, the fleeting moments of happiness. What does it mean to live a peace-filled life despite the confusion that surrounds us? As we move through this second week of Advent, how does peace define your mission and your moments?

Ponder these reminders from Scripture:

Assurance from Jesus as he encourages his disciples:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27)

Paul's encouragement to the church in Philippi:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

Paul's closing words after his third visit to Corinth:

Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. (2 Corinthians 13:11)

An encouragement to new believers in Colossae:

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. (Colossians 3:15)

A profound promise from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount:

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (Matthew 5:9)

A reminder as we put on the Armor of God:

Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. (Ephesians 6:14-15)

An encouragement from one of David's songs:

The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace. (Psalm 29:11)

And our Christmas promise in the Old Testament book of Isaiah:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

Christ's peace to you this week,

Jennie
